Knowing what to expect from fashion job interviews can be difficult for some, and it can be especially hard for those who are looking to start their first real career.
The following are suggestions for responding to situational interview questions:
What qualifies you for a career in fashion over other candidates?
This is the time where you can discuss any achievements that you had
while in other fashion related jobs as well as your achievements in
school. Give examples of things you’ve learned in class that have
translated or could translate to task that you will have at said job.
Where would you like your career in fashion to lead you?
Think long term goals. What is your 70 year life plan? -Maybe you
haven’t thought that far ahead, and that’s okay too! This is your time
to discuss your BIG goals!! Make sure you link how this potential
career can help you learn more in order to achieve these life goals.
What hobbies do you have that relate to the fashion industry?
Do you read magazines religiously? Can’t start your morning without a
cup of coffee and a visit to all your favorite fashion blogs? Are you
addicted to Pinterest, Instagram and other social media sites? ITS
TOTALLY OKAY! In fact, I’m sure its encouraged! Mention that you are a
total addict for these sites who produce imagery that inspire your
fashion eye.
How do you describe your personal style?
This question can be a bit tricky. You have to do some serious soul
searching. To help you answer this question, you must ask yourself; Why
do you wear what you wear? When I go shopping, what encourages that
purchase? Take time to deeply examine your shopping and morning dress
ritual habits. Notice a pattern? Use that to help you answer this
question. Every persons answer will be entirely unique, and that’s the
whole point! Be your own person and make sure your interviewer knows
you’ve made effort to begin figuring out who you are.
How do you handle conflict?
Step back, take a deep breath, reexamine the situation, and react.
Best way to handle any sort of conflict. Make sure you impress your
interviewer by highlighting your ability to diffuse situations before
they can even lead to a conflict. Broader questions like these, are a
great time to give direct examples from situations where you handled any
sort of conflict well.
Now go get that job/internship!
